How to Write an Email [that sells] in 20 Minutes
The art of selling
One email changed the course of my entire life.
It was 2 years ago, and for a little while, I’d been writing on Medium. If you’re not familiar with Medium, it’s a writing platform a little like YouTube where you can earn money for your words.
I remember when I first found out about Medium, it blew my mind that a platform like this existed—but anyway, I digress.
I’d been writing on Medium for maybe 2 years at this point, and I’d gathered a decent size following — about 10,000, which for somebody who wrote for a couple of hours each morning before work, felt really, well, great.
The Medium Blueprint
Towards the back end of 2022, I dabbled with digital products, using mainly Gumroad, just for fun really. I built big things in my day job, and I wanted to play with smaller, low-risk digital products in my part-time.
The Medium Blueprint was my first success, and on reflection, it was a collision of circumstances.
I was playing around with how to build and sell digital products.
I was writing consistently on Medium and was always getting asked how I did it.
One afternoon, I thought: what if I build a video course on exactly what I do? So I built the course that explained my writing process for Medium (step-by-step, the method I’d developed over writing 1000+ articles).
Alongside writing on Medium, I’d been collecting emails. I had no idea what for, I just read something somewhere that it was a good idea to collect them, so I started writing a newsletter alongside Medium.
To that email list, I wrote a series of emails, where I told them about this course I’d built.
The day that changed my life
I still remember it very vividly.
I had gone out on a site visit that day. I came back, the product wasn’t even officially launched yet, but I logged in to see the dashboard to check everything was ready to go.
To my disbelief.
There. Staring back at me was a number.
$900.
In 4 hours (before I’d even officially launched the thing), I’d made $900. I literally could not believe my eyes. I relive that moment sometimes, and it makes me smile. I’m smiling now.
Total madness. And what happened next, I never thought would happen to me.
Over the course of that weekend, I went on to make around north of $8,000. Nine emails over the course of a weekend changed my entire perspective on money, business, digital products, and my own capabilities.
Here was little me, somebody who worked 9-to-5, was totally ordinary by all definitions—had made $8,000 in a weekend.
Email changed everything
I carried on sending emails and making money.
I never really thought about email marketing until I ran my business through email marketing alongside my day job and realised that words have an incredible power to fuel your business.
When you really think about it, words are everything.
The way you articulate your idea, position your product, sell the benefits—communicate to your potential buyers, well, it’s the entire game, isn’t it?
