Happy Friday 👋,

This is a free edition. Want original models, frameworks, and mental shortcuts that make business growth faster and easier so you can sell *more* stuff? Click the little yellow button.

So, I came across two videos.

Same title, same image, same outfit, same person.

There was one subtle change and it was the difference between 111,000 and 37,000 views.

One change = 3x the views.

Here’s the story and what you can learn from it… 👇

I’m a big fan of the lean methodology, it’s simple:

  • Build

  • Measure

  • Learn

You move quickly, test your ideas, measure the impact, learn from the findings, use that as a way to build again. So the next time around you’re building smarter.

It’s the method I used to grow on Medium from zero to 89,000 followers.

And it’s the method I’m using to grow on Substack.

Here’s it in action with a gardener called Jim (and what you can learn from it) 👇

Step 1: Test a lot

Jim has 266 videos.

That’s good. And you can see from this screenshot he’s constantly testing title ideas:

  • BIG improvements At The Allotment In February!

  • You MUST Sow These Seeds In February - Gardening For Beginners

  • Finally, It’s Arrived! Finishing The No-Dig Raised Beds

The first step in this process is to build and if that’s content that’s either filming or writing A LOT.

Step 1, complete.

Step 2: Figure out what’s working

Now, it’s about understanding what’s working.

I’ve seen time and time again that content creators end up with a winning formula. That formula is the 80% of 20%. And it works for a good while before it tapers off. I’ll show you some more examples later but for now, back to Jim.

Let’s have a look at what’s working for Jim — these are his popular posts.

What do you notice?

  • Wording: MUST

  • Wording: You

  • Timing: Jan, Feb

  • Image: Smiling

  • Blurring of seeds - hide something (make a promise)

Step 3: Build an experiment to test

Then I would take all the things I’ve learned and build an experiment to test my theory so..

Experiment
  • Hypothesis: That all of the findings above combined will make a more engaging title

  • Success criteria: 10% increase in av. views

  • Title: You MUST Choose Raised Beds This February (Here’s How to Get Started!) *I used the ChatGPT prompt below.*

  • Time: Review data after 7 days

Here’s the ChatGPT prompt 🤖 (to help you do the same)
